Scope and Contents This is a photocopy of a letter from Oscar Burbank to Dr. W. A. Rohlf, of Waverly, Iowa, written on November 30, 1899. In the letter Burbank recalls witnessing what he states was the first use of ether in a surgical operation. Dr. W. T. G. Morton apparently originated the use of ether. He asked Dr. Warren to use the anesthetic procedure in a surgical operation. Dr. Warren then performed the operation in November 1846 at Massachusetts General Hospital.
